ADAS Calibration in Northampton.

Modern driver assistance systems rely on cameras and radar aimed to within a fraction of a degree. Certain repairs put them out, and they have to be recalibrated.

What ADAS covers

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are the features that read the road for you: autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and parking sensors. They work from a forward-facing camera behind the windscreen, radar units in the bumpers, and a set of ultrasonic and side sensors.

When recalibration is required

  • After a windscreen replacement on any camera-equipped vehicle
  • After suspension work or a change in ride height
  • After wheel alignment or tracking adjustment
  • After front or rear bumper removal, repair or replacement
  • Following any collision damage, however minor it looked
  • When an ADAS warning or system fault appears on the dash

Why it matters

A camera aimed a degree out is looking metres off target at the distance where automatic emergency braking would need to react. The system does not know it is wrong. It will keep operating, just on bad information. That is why calibration is a required step after those jobs rather than an optional extra.

Static and dynamic calibration

Static calibration uses manufacturer targets set at measured distances in a controlled space. Dynamic calibration is completed on a road drive at a set speed while the system relearns. Many vehicles need both. Which applies depends on the make and model, and EE Motors will confirm what your vehicle requires when you call with the registration.

Frequently asked

Do I need ADAS calibration after a new windscreen?
If your car has a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windscreen, yes. The camera has to be recalibrated to the new glass or the assistance systems work from incorrect data.
How do I know if my car has ADAS?
Features like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking or blind spot monitoring all indicate ADAS. Call 01604 639539 with your registration to confirm.
Is calibration needed after wheel alignment?
Often yes. Some systems reference the vehicle thrust line, so changing the geometry can put the camera aim out. It is checked as part of the job.
