When to call for recovery

What to do while you wait

If you have broken down on a motorway or dual carriageway, get everyone out of the vehicle and behind the barrier, away from traffic, before you make any calls. That comes first. On an ordinary road, park as far to the left as possible, put the hazards on and use a warning triangle if the road is fast and it is safe to place one.

Have your registration, exact location and a description of what happened ready. Do not keep trying to start an overheating engine or drive a car with a suspected brake fault to save the tow. That turns a repair into a much larger one.
