Clutch replacement
Labour starts from £200 and varies with the vehicle, because the gearbox has to come out and some cars make that far harder than others. A slipping clutch, a high biting point, a judder when pulling away or a heavy pedal are the usual signs. Where a dual mass flywheel is fitted, it is inspected at the same time. Replacing a clutch onto a worn flywheel means doing the whole job twice.
Cambelts
Cambelt replacement is scheduled by age and mileage, and it is one of the few jobs genuinely worth doing on time rather than when symptoms appear. A belt that snaps in service usually destroys the engine. The water pump is normally replaced alongside it, since it is driven by the same belt and the labour is already done.
